Receding Fence Line
Without the fence line, it would be impossible to get a sense of the distances involved in traveling across the vast reaches of the Colorado Plateau. As you drive, it almost feels as if you are standing still. But every so often, you pass a fence line with a cattle guard and you can tell you are moving across the valleys towards the distant mountains. It is interesting in this photo that there are several tumbleweeds blown against the fence. Although intimately associated with the old West, the Russian Thistle or Tumbleweed is a recent foreign addition. None of the original pioneers would have ever seen a tumbleweed.
