Gardening can be a highly civilized and civilizing activity. No where is this more evident than in formal Japanese gardens. Everywhere you look, you see evidence of patience and beauty. There is definitely a discussion here about the whether a cultivated tree is natural and whether nature itself has a monopoly on its own beauty, but there is something appealing about the formality of a garden that argues well for itself.
