The theory here that the cows will not cross the guard because they cannot see firm ground to walk on. It must work because there are probably a million of these scattered all over the west. We used to pick up our feet in car when we drove over a cattle guard to keep from getting out toes caught in the bars. We don't seem to worry about that as much anymore.
