Monument Valley is not so much a valley as a section of the high Colorado Plateau straddling the Arizona/Utah border. Most of the famous monoliths are in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. It is remarkably close to the town of Kayenta and even though most of the photographs do not show houses or other structures, you have to work a little to keep them out of the photos.
