I have seldom seen a flower so red. I don't think that photos can do it justice. This is a Cardinal Flower or Lobilia cardinalis. Here is a short quote from Wikipedia about the plant.
Lobelia cardinalis (syn. L. fulgens, cardinal flower) is a species of flowering plant in the bellflower family Campanulaceae native to the Americas, from southeastern Canada south through the eastern and southwestern United States, Mexico and Central America to northern Colombia.Hmm. Not much to say, but it seems to be a common plant. I wonder why I have not noticed it before,
