It is easy to start imagining battlements and castles when you walk among the ever-changing vista of sandstone cliffs on the Colorado Plateau. You can walk or drive a short distance and have a completely different type of formations. The vegetation in this vast area of sand is more of an afterthought. Unlike the rainforests of the world, the landscape is not dominated by green plants, but by colored sandstone.
