Spines and More Spines

It is supposed that the spines on the cactus do more than protect the plant. They also act as shade structures, albeit not much of that however. They are classified as modified leaf structures although it really stretches the imagination to see how they started out as leaves. It seems to be the rule in the desert that any plant that is vaguely edible has spines or thorns.
