Plymouth Rock
Two of my ancestors came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. Generally, these people who were the first to arrive are called "Pilgrims." The term actually refers to a group of English Puritans who fled to America to avoid religious persecution. When they got to America many of them ultimately became Congregationalists. Not all the people on the Mayflower were Puritans. The rock is actually a memorial to the landing enclosed in a covering right on the beach in Plymouth, Massachusetts. There are no contemporary accounts of a rock and the first reference dates more than 100 years after the original landing.
