The lone butte or monument is nearly an icon of the desert along with saguaro cactus and road runners. The interesting thing is all three exist and are quite common in Arizona, but not so much elsewhere. Usually, these individual rock formations are caused by having a core of harder rock than that surrounding the formation. Sometimes they are created when there is a cap of harder rock allowing the softer material to be eroded. Although they are quite common, they are dramatic.
