Even though these Golden Barrel cactus look formidable, they are really quite benign. I cannot remember anyone I knew who ever got stuck by a barrel cactus. They are pretty easy to avoid and the spines, although very sharp, are not positioned to cause much damage unless you happened to run into one directly.
