Anyplace some small amount of soil accumulates, even in the desert, plants grow. When the weather changes and the soil dries out, these plants will likely be brown and dead looking. It only takes one or two rainstorms to change their color and bring them back to life. At the same time, the surrounding rocks are colored by the lichens.
