This young Diamond Back Rattlesnake or
Crotalus atrox has its tail and body ready to strike forward. It is commonly thought that the snakes have to be coiled to strike. This is an unfortunate fable. If you were within six feet of this snake you would be in danger of being bitten. If you look closely, you will see that it has just eaten a rather large meal, probably a mouse.
