We have talked about mud cracks quite a bit in my classes. I thought it was interesting that if you look at the lines, when they intersect at a new crack it's almost always perpendicular. You can also get mudcracks preserved between layers in sedimentary rocks and use them to figure out which way is "up" in the layers.
