All Cracked Up

I have been fascinated with the way mud dries and cracks. Some times the dried mud can be spectacular. The white sheen on this dried mud is salt.

  1. We have talked about mud cracks quite a bit in my classes. I thought it was interesting that if you look at the lines, when they intersect at a new crack it's almost always perpendicular. You can also get mudcracks preserved between layers in sedimentary rocks and use them to figure out which way is "up" in the layers.
