The Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is one of its most famous attractions. Unfortunately, the Springs have changed considerably since I first saw them as a child. the formations are made of calcium carbonate deposited by the thermal springs with water originating in the Norris Geyser Basin. The water emerges at a temperature of about 170 degrees Fahrenheit or 80 degrees Centigrade. The changes occur steadily with huge amounts of calcium carbonate being deposited every day. Here is a link to
Yellowstone Science with photos showing the changes in the Springs over time and indicating that they are not drying up, but are constantly changing.
