Pelican Island

This is the Pelican Island of its namesake Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Here is a list of the types of birds that nest on this tiny island:


  • Brown pelican
  • Wood stork
  • Great egret
  • Snowy egret
  • Reddish egret
  • Cattle egret
  • Great blue heron
  • Little blue heron
  • Tricolored heron
  • Green-backed heron
  • Black-crowned night heron
  • Double-crested cormorant (resident)
  • Anhinga
  • White ibis
  • American oystercatcher
  • Common moorhen
Quoting from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website: "The Pelican Island rookery provides critical nesting habitat for the endangered wood stork. Other refuge areas provide critical habitat for several other threatened and endangered species, including manatees, loggerhead and green sea turtles and southeastern beach mice."
