Apologies to Joseph Conrad, but that is what came to mind when I looked at this picture. Actually, this is Pampas Grass. Supposedly it grew in abundance out on the Pampa. But it was conspicuously missing in the months I spent in Argentine right in the middle of the flattest part of the Pampa. In fact, I don't remember seeing this plant until became a popular ornamental. Well it does come from South America but it is considered an invasive weed in some countries outside of Brazil and Argentina.
